Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection hard enough for sexual activity. It is the most common form of sexual dysfunction, other forms of sexual dysfunction include low libido and early ejaculation. The cause of erectile dysfunction is often multifactorial, and it becomes more common after the age of 40. Dr. Soon offers oral medications, injections as well as painless, non-invasive, low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction, known as (ED) is defined as the inability to attain and / or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual function. For some men, ED can be transient and happen from time to time. For others, it can come on slowly with age. If it happens regularly with sexual activity, it may start to affect your quality of life, in which case you may choose to seek treatment.

Globally, ED is a common problem, although many men choose not to discuss it. Research indicates that ED will impact 322 million men worldwide by 2025. Erectile dysfunction is strongly linked to age, it affects about 40% of men aged 40 and older. Erectile dysfunction is also linked to other causes, which can be divided into biological and psychological components.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

The causes of ED can be divided into biological and psychological components, but normally when a person suffers from ED, it is due to a combination of both components.

Biological and Psychological causes of ED include:

  • Decreased blood flow

  • High blood pressure

  • Smoking

  • Diabetes

  • Nerve damage from radiation treatment or surgery

  • Low testosterone

  • Structural disease of the penis like Peyronie’s disease

  • Intake of certain medications

  • Increased stress Depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions

Our approach to ED

We believe in shared-decision making, and using this framework, we will choose a treatment that works best for you and your partner. Our treatment options include oral medications, injections, vacuum erection devices, as well as new regenerative and restorative treatments using low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LiESWT).

Learn more about shockwave therapy from the European Urology Association.

At Soon Urology MD, we use an effective low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave treatment technology. Shockwave therapy uses low intensity sound waves to treat vascular causes of erectile dysfunction, not just its symptoms. Shockwave therapy has been successfully tested and used in other areas of medicine to promote new blood vessel growth in the treated tissue. Shockwave therapy is a revolutionary treatment to improve men’s sexual health, by increasing blood flow to the penis, in order to restore a man’s natural penile function.
