Prostate Enlargement

Prostate enlargement or benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) is a natural part of getting older and occurs in virtually every aging genetic male. BPH can exist without symptoms, in which case it does not need to be treated. However, if the prostate enlargement blocks the opening to the bladder, patients can experience urinary symptoms including straining to begin urinating, a slow urinary stream, splitting of the urinary stream, a stream that will start and stop, as well as frequency, urgency, and nighttime urination. Our clinic offers effective medical and surgical treatments, including non-OHIP water vapor therapy, for patients suffering from prostate enlargement.

Water Vapour Therapy for Prostate Enlargement (BPH)

During each 9-second water vapour therapy treatment, steam is released into the prostate to shrink the excess tissue that is pressing on the urethra.

Soon Urology MD is excited to offer steam treatment as the next generation treatment for prostate enlargement. Water vapour therapy is a new treatment option for men suffering from BPH. It uses radiofrequency to heat water into a steam ball, which is used to shrink prostate tissue obstructing the urethra. This treatment option is a minimally-invasive alternative to medication, and more invasive procedures such as TURP or green light laser. It is useful in men with a prostate size larger than 30mL. Water vapour therapy is a one-time, outpatient treatment, done under local anesthetic or light sedation by Dr. Soon. A catheter is inserted for several days after the procedure to help manage swelling. Patients can expect improvement in urination as early as two weeks with maximal benefit at 3 months after treatment. Patients treated with water vapour therapy will not experience the sexual dysfunction that occurs after surgery such as retrograde ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. If you think water vapour therapy is right for you, you can request an appointment today.
